From Peter: I google searched front spring shackle location, front or back, and a number of things came up. Its interesting reading. Front shackles on front springs are said to have a bit rougher ride but perhaps offer better handling and less nose diving while braking. With the weight of an 8 cylinder engine pressing down perhaps S-K engineers thought the handling while braking or hitting objects in the road would be better. There are pros and cons to both shackle locations apparently.
From Roger: I went ahead and did a search too, with similar results. The only "must" seems to be that the drag link connects between the axle and the fixed (non-shackled) eye. Most opinions are that with the fixed eye at the back, that bolt takes a beating over bumps and irregularities. Maybe ride height figured into the equation for SK.
The question I'm wondering about is how many other manufacturers did this? I can't think of any off the top of my head, but maybe I have never paid attention?
